Working at Westcord Hotels

Meet Feyona

My name is Feyona and for the past 10 months I have been doing an internship at the HR department as a hospitality trainer as well as researching the topic sustainable employability.

In order to graduate, I needed to do an internship internship in my final year and I wanted to stay in Leeuwarden, that is how I  ended up at WestCord Hotels. The job description for hospitality trainer appealed to me, because it was something different than the 'standard' duty management and marketing internships. I started in January 2022 and from day 1 I was given so much freedom to develop myself in the subjects that I find interesting and important. This allowed me to be creative and fill in my internship the way I wanted to. I was responsible for my own learning and had the support of a great group of colleagues, how cool!

The working atmosphere within the team is informal but professional. By this I mean that besides working very hard, we also have time for good conversations and that we often plan fun outings together as a team. That way you get to know each other better and the trust between each other grows.

What I like most about my job is the frequent travel between the various hotels.  I get the chance to go to all the hotels to provide training and to talk to colleagues about how they experience their work. With this information I then come back to HR to celebrate positive feedback and see how we can address areas for improvement across WestCord Hotels. I think it's incredibly cool to enthuse our youngest colleagues and to teach them that the work they do cannot be done by just anyone. In my opinion, the hospitality industry is a real profession that should be given a bit more appreciation in the Netherlands!

Speaking of appreciation, that is something that is extremely important to me, both to get and especially to give. I therefore always try to compliment the smallest things. This is beneficial for the working atmosphere and ensures that a broad smile from ear to ear appears on my colleagues' faces, isn't that great? Work doesn't always have to be fun, we all have tasks that we don't look forward to, but I am convinced that at WestCord I have the best colleagues! ;)
